Fox Tower

Up above Brough in Cumbria is Fox Tower. It stands almost 1000ft above sea level on private land adjacent to the Warcop Ranges. In May 2014 the owner of the land allowed public access and I took advantage of it, the tower being clearly visible from Warcop Station on a clear day.

Unfortunately the day was rather hazy and at the time I only had a 6MP camera with an indifferent 70-210mm zoom lens so some of the long views are not as good as I would have hoped for.

Although most of the photos in this gallery were taken in 2014 this one (and the next) were taken in August 2017 when favourable light gave me the chance to try out a new zoom lens.

The path through the woods leading from Hellbeck Hall to Fox Tower was a fine sight with plenty of bluebells in flower.

And one part of the wood had several fine shows of wild garlic as well. There were plenty of other wild flowers in bloom in the woodland

A view of the tower from the plateau behind it with the Eden Valley behind. Although the tower has some resemblance to an old mine it is a folly, built in the 1770s by the owner of the Helbeck Estate, John Metcalf Carleton. It appears to have been used for picnic parties and for admiring the views.

Having looked at Fox Tower from Warcop Station on the Eden Valley Railway many many times I had to take a photo of the railway from the Tower! Some of the rolling stock can clearly be seen and the station building is partly obscured by another house on the right of the picture
